                                                                 Our Capital City
I live in Ukraine and I have always dreamt of visiting Kyiv, our capital. Last summer my dream came true. My mother and I went to Kyiv by train. It took us eight hours to reach Kyiv.
The population of the city is over 3 million people. Kyiv stands on the banks of the Dnipro river, which divides it into two parts.
It’s one of the oldest cities in Europe. Its history goes back to the 5th century, when three brothers of a Slavic tribe Kyi, Shchek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid founded Kyiv. Th city was named after the eldest brother Kyi.
Now Kyiv is famous all over the world for its beauty, for its green hills and unique architecture. There are old buildings, museums, monuments, historical places in Kyiv. Volodymyr Hill is one of them. From here you can see a bridge which connects the left and the right banks of the Dnipro.
St. Sophia Cathedral was founded by Yaroslav the Wise in 1037. The first library was founded on the ground of the cathedral. In the square opposite the St. Sophia Cathedral there is a monument to Bogdan Khmelnitskyi, Ukrainian national hero.
The Kyiv Pechery Monastery (Lavra), another ancient monument, stands on a green hill above the Dnipro. It was founded in 1051. A lot of ancient monuments such as Volodymyr Cathedral, Church of St.Andrew, Golden Gates, Askold’s Grave attract attention of tourists.
Kyiv is the centre of Ukrainian culture. One of the famous theatres in the counry is Shevchenko Opera and Ballet Theatre.
There are many plants and factories in Kyiv that produce cameras, motocycles, Tvsets and other foods.
Kyiv is also the city of higher schools, among which Shevchenko State University, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and others.
One half of Kyiv’s territory is occupied by gardens and parks and in spring and summer time trees and bushes are full of greenery, and the city looks like one huge park.
Kyiv is a beautiful city. If only once you have visited Kyiv you’ll dream of coming back here again.
